Remote Worker Profile:Seanna Nichol
Contractor since 2013
Why did you choose Remote Life?
It actually chose me. I was working in an office environment and was let go and realized I had the skills to work remotely
Where can we find you working most days?
In my home office or working from a remote location when I travel
What’s the hardest part about working remotely?
Not having the social aspect of an office. I work with a really amazing team, and only seeing them once every weekday for 15 minutes just isn’t enough sometimes.
What’s the best part about working remotely?
The flexibility to work from anywhere as long as I have access to wifi
Do you see yourself returning to typical office life?
Possibly. There would definitely be negotiating involved that would include working from home a couple of days a week and flexibility to travel for longer periods of time beyond ‘vacation’ as long as I am online during my time away.
What advice would you give to someone starting remote associate life for the first time?
Know that it will be lonely at times and you have to be focused and self-disciplined to keep yourself on task. Those dishes in the sink can wait. And so can organizing your closet.
Any other tips?
What works for me when I am working from home, is that I go to work 5 days a week. I get up, get dressed for work, eat breakfast, and I leave from the back door off my kitchen, walk around my building, and enter through the front door that leads to my office/living room. If this isn’t available to you, put a morning practice in place that allows you to transition from ‘home mode’ to ‘work mode’ and make your work space somewhere that is ‘your office’ for whatever hours you are working in it. Create a section that inspires you and that you want to be in for 7-8 hours a day. Be patient. It’s going to take some getting use to if you were used to working in an office environment.
